The act is taken from Hindu Sanskrit epic of ancient India where Droupadi also known as 'Panchali' who had married to 5 brothers known as 'Pandavas' lost her in gambling with their cousin brothers known as 'Kauravas' . Draupadi's cheer-haran( चीर हरण ), literally meaning stripping of one's clothes, marks a definitive moment in the story of Mahabharata. Her husbands, the Pandavas are tricked by their cousins, the Kauravas, into a fixed game of dice in which they lose their all their wealth and kingdom. Yudhishthira, the eldest and most-respected Pandava, is then goaded into gambling away each brother. Still the Kauravas are not satisfied by this humiliation, so they taunt Yudhishthira further into betting his wife. Against the protests of the family elders, who argue a woman cannot be put at stake, Yudhishthira puts Draupadi as a bet for the next round. When the Kauravas win, the eldest one Duryodhana, commands his younger brother Dushasana to forcefully bring her to the gathering. Dushasana drags her into the court by her hair. Drunk with power, Dushasana tries to strip Draupadi of her sari. Seeing her husbands unable or unwilling to help her, Draupadi prays to Lord Krishna to protect her. As Dushasana unwraps layers and layers of her sari, it keeps getting extended. Finally, a tired Dushasana backs off without being able to remove her clothing. This story is presented in the form of Chhau Dance in this video where Guru Pattanayak is performing the role of Duryodhana and a russian dancer who came to Guruji to learn Chhau is performing the role of Droupadi. Through this act Guru Pattanayak wants to convey a message "Never Repeat it Again" to the society so that no one would face the same fate as Droupadi. The boatman plies his oars with his beloved beside him. The way is strewn with joy and perils. While the songs and the thundering waves bind the lovers in close embrace. The tiny boat sails on the vast tides (there are many philosophies in this dance). The boat here sets an example of security, later they are caught by storm as if they are dragged into very vertex of life and this brings out woman’s innate desire to yield and sublimate to man and her dependence on man whose duty and privilege is to protect her.
